ASTROMETRIC OBSERVATIONS OF THE MARTIAN SATELLITES FROM TARIJA, 1988
Abstract
141 topocentric positions of Phobos and 113 of Deimos are presented as
obtained from photographic observations performed during August and
November 1988 at the 60-cm reflector of the Tarija Observatory, Bolivia.
I.Introduction
A set of photographic observations of the Martian system was
made in the frame of the ground-based observing project for the Phobos
mission at the Tarija Observatory (TO), Bolivia, during the opposition
of Mars, between August and November 1988.
Most of plates were rapidly processed at the same time. Reduction of the
plates was done by such a method using the measures on the reference stars
only to determine a required orientation angle and scale factor. The planet
-relative coordinates of Phobos and Deimos had been transmitted to orbit
centres in due course by 15 November 1988.
However, because the Mars' images are overexposed, the deduced planet-
satellite coordinates suffer from the magnitude error and systematic errors
due to estimation of the position of the planetary center. With this in
mind we have rereduced the observations in "full mode" in order to determine
equatorial coordinates of the Martian satellites.
II.Observations
The observations were made with the 60-cm Cassegrain telescope. The plate
scale is 27.5 arcsec/mm, giving the 6 x 6 cm field of about 30 x 30 arcmin.
During the interval, August - November 1988, more than 200 usable exposures
of the Martian system were taken on ORWO ZU-21 and NP-27 plates with no
filter or other magnitude compensation making one to six exposures on each
plate. When multiple exposures were taken on a single plate the telescope
was shifted in declination or right ascension by a small amount between
exposures. The exposure time varied from 20 to 50 seconds, depending on
the meteorological conditions. The time of observation was recorded to an
accuracy of 0.5 s with the marine chronometer.
III.Astrometric processing and results
With the observations having been carried out, we come back to the Main
Astronomical Observatory (MAO) in Kyiv and started a new examination of
the plates. We found that some faint images of satellites previously not
measured with the ASCORECORD 3DP measuring machine at the TO could be
measured with the ASCOREMAT measuring machine at the MAO. Therefore several
plates were remeasured. In addition, another plates containing the faint
measurable images were also measured.
In order to eliminate the systematic errors of setting, four sets of
measures of each image on the plate were made in different positions of
reversing prism. The means of four such measures were taken as the measures
of the plate.
It was often the case that a given satellite was embedded in the planetary
halo or diffraction spike. So setting of cross-wires on such images, especially
of hardly visible ones are rather doubtful.
In processing the plates, each exposure and each measurement were treated
separately. Measures of Mars and its satellite(s) were reduced by the method
of plate constants.
The reference star positions were taken from a
catalogue specially prepared for this project by H.Potter at the Pulkovo
Observatory. The catalogue is based upon the FK5/J2000 version of the FOCAT-S
star catalogue and has a mean epoch of 1987. The catalogue provides an average
density of 23 stars per square degree and a magnitude range between 6 -11.5
within one degree of Mars' apparent path from July through November 1988.
The positions of satellites, resulting from the plate reduction,
have been compared with the JPL DE403 ephemerides. A number of them were found
to have residuals greater than 1.25 arcsec and these have been rejected.
The nonrejected positions derived from the repeated measurements of a given
exposure were united. The positions of Mars were excluded from the subsequent
discussion.
The astrometric positions of Phobos and Deimos remained after trying
are given in Table 1 and are plotted on Fig. 1.
For each position are given the epoch of observation (the UTC mid-exposure epoch),
right ascension and declination referred to the standard equator and
equinox of J2000, the plate number, the exposure number, the number of
reference stars, the rms star residuals for RA and Dec
(the standard deviations of the plate solutions in RA and Dec), the emulsion,
codes for observer and measuring machine (identified at the end of the table).

IY.Conclusion
We presented above 254 observations of Martian satellites. They are distributed
between 22 nights in four months. The reported coordinates of satellites
in the combination with accurate ephemereis of Mars may yield more reliable
data than measured planet-satellites coordinates.
